Best Airports On In and Around Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head Island in South Carolina is the perfect destination for those who are looking for fun and adventure. Resting in the heart of the Lowcountry, it is known for its miles of beautiful beaches, protected wetlands, and immaculate golf courses.
If you are planning to visit our beautiful island in the near future, you might be wondering how to get to Hilton Head (and out of
Hilton Head) after your vacation.
Well, there are a number of options you can choose from. You can actually opt to drive or take a shuttle or taxi all the way to Hilton Head. However, one of the easiest and fastest ways to get there is by plane.
Hilton Head Airport
If you are looking for airports on Hilton Head Island … well, you don’t really have to look far because honestly, there is only one airport in Hilton Head. And it is aptly known as the Hilton Head Airport.
The Hilton Head Airport is a public airport located on Beach City Road on Hilton Head Island and is owned by Beaufort County.
To give you a bit of a background on this one and only airport on the island, it actually opened in 1967 with the assistance of professional golfer, Arnold Palmer.
The airport is used for general aviation, however, it is also served by one commercial airline that has daily flights (typically less than an hour flight) onto the island from Charlotte and one public charter airline which has limited service.
Hilton Head Airport has an area of 131 acres – definitely a lot smaller than other nearby airports. In fact, several Hilton Head visitors consider it as one of the tiniest airports they have ever been to.
However, despite its tiny size, most people are happy that it is simple and low-key and has a “friendly staff”. Visitors are also happy that it has free wi-fi. And … the best thing is that there are no lines for security and check-ins, unlike in bigger airports, so that you don’t need to allocate too much extra time before your flight.
Another good thing about using this airport is that it basically removes the hassle and stress of an hour-long drive and having to pay for a shuttle to get you to other airports like Savannah and Charleston if you’re flying out of Hilton Head. If you’re vacationing in Hilton Head, it’s just within your reach.
The Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport
The Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport is also a public airport. The airport was recently included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017-2021 which put it in the category of primary commercial service airport. It was also named as one of the 10 Best Domestic Airports in Travel + Leisure magazine’s 2017 World’s Best Awards.
From here you may choose to grab a taxi, a shuttle, or rent a car for the week to get around Hilton Head and other tourist destinations in the area. It’s an easy drive on I-95 North to exit 8 from the airport.
Visitors have so far commented that despite it being a small airport, it is cozy, people are friendly and it feels homey. Visitors are also happy that the airport has nice food varieties, a well-maintained seating area, and a cool atmosphere.
Getting to Hilton Head Island should be easy and stress-free if you carefully plan your trip. Based on personal experiences and good reviews made by hundreds of happy flyers, we are sure that your travel experience will definitely be worth remembering.
